Crow & Gargoyle

“Crow & Gargoyle” are two original characters that began life as a series of silly sketches to cheer up a friend. As often happens with characters, they quickly took on a life of their own and grew far beyond their original purpose (which they served more than adequately). Crow (they/them) is an American crow (Corvus brachyrhynchos). The gargoyle is Gary (they/them), named because the autocorrect function of my friend’s phone kept changing “garg” to “Gary.” Gary has also become my mascot; something else I didn’t originally plan, but it works!
Digital drawing of a grayish-purple gargoyle sitting upright and leaning forward, with its neck arched protectively over six crow nestlings (two pink, two blue, and two white--transgender pride flag colors) gathered between and around its front paws, all looking up at the gargoyle. One of the pink nestlings is perched on the toes of the gargoyle's right front paw. The gargoyle has a rainbow pride scarf around its neck. An adult black crow is purched on the arch of the gargoyle's neck, and is wearing a yellow-purple-white-black nonbinary pride scarf around its neck. The crow looks quite pleased. The gargoyle is looking sideways at the viewer with a proud, content expression that suggests they are happy to protect the clutch of nestlings while still taking the job seriously.

Pride 2026

Digital drawing of a grayish-purple gargoyle and a black crow in a snowy nighttime scene. The gargoyle is reclining in a position similar to a cat 'loafing,' but with front paws visible. The gargoyle has comically long teal scarf wrapped around its neck, the end of its tail (which is curved forward toward the viewer), and one of its front legs. The same scarf extends to the gargoyle's side where it wraps several times around the crow. Only the crow's beak feet, and tail feathers are visible sticking out of the folds of the scarf.

Wintermas 2025

Digital drawing of a grayish-purple gargoyle perched on a low brick wall. The brick wall is painted in a red-orange-yellow-green-blue-purple gradient. The words 'MAKE GOOD TROUBLE' are painted in white on the wall. ONe of the gargoyle's paws is hanging over the edge of the wall with claws extended. A black crow is perched on one of the gargoyle's horns. The crow is holding a paintbrush with white paint on the bristles in its beak. Both animals look pleased or satisfied, like they are challenging the viewer to follow the advice of the writing on the wall.

Make Good Trouble
(2025)

Digital drawing in a retro 'synthwave' or 'vaporwave' style. The colors are mostly flat with cell-style shading. Gargoyle's head and shoulders are contained in a circular frame. The tops of the gargoyle's wings extend beyond the circle border. Crow is 'loafing' on top of the gargoyle's head. The gargoyle is wearing black 'shutter shades' and the crow is wearing small (but still too large) sunglasses with mirrored lenses that reflect a sunset gradient. The background behind the characters shows a starry night sky and a stylized setting sun. The horizon is a glowing pink 'neon' line. Both characters are 'off-model' colors; the crow is purple and the gargoyle is cyan blue with purple wing membranes.

Digital drawing of a friendly-looking grayish-purple gargoyle in profile, facing the left sideof the image. The gargoyle is sitting on its haunches while leaning forward with its forelegs tucked up and neck outstreched while holding a large brass ring in its mouth. A lit lantern hangs from the brass ring. The gargoyle's eyes are glowing in a bright blue/cyan color. A black crow is perched on one of the gargoyle's horns. The background of the image is dark purple and navy blue. The crow and gargoyle are both illuminated from the yellow glow of the lantern and the blue glow of the gargoyle's eyes.

Be the Light
(2025)

Digital drawing of a grayish-purple gargoyle sitting on its haunches in a snowy nighttime scene. The gargoyle has a large wreath of green pine boughs around its neck. A black crow is nestled in the crook of the wreath against the gargoyle's neck, looking content. The gargoyle's expression looks very pleased, with its head is tilted up and its tongue is extended to catch a falling snowflake. The scene is lit with a pink highlight from the upper right of the frame. Blue reflected light from the snow highlights the animals from below.

Both animals look content while resting on a pile of fallen yellow and orange leaves.

A brown bat is clinging to one of the gargoyle's shoulders. A red fox is curled up and sleeping near one of the gargoyle's hind feet. A striped skunk is near the gargoyle's other foot. A black crow is perched on the arch of the gargoyle's neck, also extending its wings forward and around to mirror the gargoyle's pose.
